Shubman Gill Scripts History with Record-Breaking Double Century at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill etched his name into the history books with a historic double-hundred against England in the second Test of the ongoing series at Edgbaston. He became the highest scorer for India in a Test innings on English soil. The Indian captain went past the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record of 221, set back in 1979 at The Oval, and did so in commanding style during a dominant Indian batting display.

He brought up his seventh Test hundred on Day 1 and did not stop there. He went past the 150-run mark for the first time in Test cricket and then went on to hammer a double-century.

This innings also saw Shubman Gill break multiple other records. Notably, he surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin’s 179 to register the highest individual score by an Indian captain in England. His double-ton now tops the charts.

A Record-Breaking Marathon: All Major Milestones from Shubman Gill’s Historic Double Century 

Gill reached his double century in the second session of Day 2, raising his arms to the dressing room after a celebratory roar. He became only the first Asian captain to score a double-century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), a landmark no one from the subcontinent had touched before him while leading a side in those conditions.

Also, he now holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in England, surpassing Gavaskar’s 221 from 1979.

One of the standout moments of his innings was when he overtook Azharuddin’s 179, a record that had stood for more than three decades, to claim the highest score by an Indian captain in England. 

Gill is only the sixth Indian captain to score a double-century in Tests, joining the likes of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

He also registered the highest Test score by an Indian captain, going past Kohli's 254.

Shubman Gill’s Double Ton Puts India on Top

At the time of writing, India have tightened their grip on the Edgbaston Test. The scoreboard reads 556/6. Gill is continuing his marathon knock and is unbeaten on 259. Washington Sundar is batting on 41. 

With the pitch flattening out and England's bowlers visibly tiring, the visitors are asserting their dominance.
