The 33-year-old Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket. He shared the news via a post on Instagram.
Heinrich Klaasen, known for being South Africa’s explosive middle-order batter over the last five years, made a decision that came as a shock to many, especially considering he is still in good form and peak fitness. He recently concluded his IPL 2025 stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he delivered a standout performance by scoring the fastest century of the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, which became the highlight of his season.

Heinrich Klaasen Shocks Cricket World with Sudden Retirement
His unexpected retirement came just hours after Glenn Maxwell announced his decision to retire from ODIs. However, Klaasen clarified that his decision was made after long consideration, driven largely by family priorities and his plans for the future.
“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so.”
Heinrich Klaasen spent the majority of his international career representing South Africa in white-ball formats. He played 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is. His Test career, however, was short-lived, with just 4 matches played before he announced his retirement from the format last year.
“From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I had worked for and dreamed about as a young boy. To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career.”
In his farewell message, Klaasen also extended heartfelt thanks to his teammates and friends, emphasizing the relationships he built along the way.
“I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Playing for the Proteas allowed me to meet great people who changed my life, and to those people I can’t say thank you enough. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone that supported me and my teammates during my career.”
