England’s Kiwi Connection Grows as Tim Southee Joins as Specialist Skills Consultant

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the appointment of former New Zealand pacer Tim Southee as a Specialist Skills Consultant for the England men’s cricket teams on a short-term basis.

Southee, New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker, steps into the role previously held by England legend James Anderson, who has prioritised a season-long playing commitment with Lancashire. Anderson, who retired from Test cricket in July 2024, had served as England’s bowling consultant since his retirement. As Anderson was no longer available, reports had already suggested that England were trying to sign Southee for the role.

The 36-year-old Tim Southee, who retired from Test cricket in December 2024 after a distinguished 16-year career, will join England’s coaching staff under head coach Brendon McCullum, a fellow New Zealander and long-time teammate.

England Rope in Tim Southee as Specialist Skills Consultant

Southee’s appointment marks a significant addition to the England set-up, bringing his vast experience of 391 Test wickets and 776 international wickets across formats. His role will see him work closely with England’s fast-bowlers, including Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, ahead of a packed summer schedule.

Southee’s first assignment begins with the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22, followed by white-ball series against the West Indies and a high-profile five-match Test series against India, starting June 20.

His stint will conclude after the final Test against India at The Oval on August 4, after which he is set to resume his playing career with Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.

The ECB announced Southee’s appointment on Thursday, highlighting his global experience, stating,

"Southee, 36, who retired from international cricket in December as New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker, will support England’s squads across all formats through to the conclusion of the Rothesay Test series against India. With his vast experience of playing in a wide range of conditions around the world and across all formats, he brings valuable insight and knowledge to the players."

Southee’s strong rapport with McCullum, with whom he played 170 times for New Zealand is expected to enhance his impact within the team.

Tim Southee’s Illustrious Career Highlights

Before retiring from Test cricket in December 2024, Southee handed over the captaincy to Tom Latham, under whom New Zealand achieved a historic 3-0 whitewash against India at home.

Southee’s 16-year career included appearances in four ODI World Cups, seven T20I World Cups and two Champions Trophy tournaments. A key figure in New Zealand’s 2021 World Test Championship victory against India, Southee claimed five wickets in the final, cementing his legacy as one of New Zealand’s finest fast-bowlers.

As England gears up for a crucial summer, Southee’s experience and proven track record are expected to provide a significant boost to the team’s preparations
